Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia will square off on April 20, 2024, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Super Lightweight category bout is slated for 12 rounds, meaning that the maximum weight allowed is 140 pounds (10 stone or 63.5 KG). Since their amateur days, Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have harbored a great deal of animosity. Garcia outclasses Haney in power, with an 83% knockout percentage compared to 48% for Haney. Haney, however, is the more seasoned professional boxer.
Haney made his professional debut in 2015, five months ahead of Garcia, whose first bout came in 2016 and has had six additional contests. Compared to Garcia’s 100 professional rounds, he has fought 110 more. A driven Haney wants to get Ryan Garcia out of boxing; he also, wants to see Canelo fight Benavidez.
Garcia has recently been acting in a strange way, and the two have been exchanging angry words for months. On April 20, the two young fighters square off in their first professional match after a series that ended with a 3-3 score. Despite doubts about his eligibility, Garcia will challenge Haney for the latter’s WBC super lightweight championship.
Since winning the WBC lightweight interim title against Zaur Abdullaev in 2019, Haney has become the gold medal holder. After being given a full-time promotion, he faced off against George Kambosos Jr. in Australia in June 2022 and prevailed, taking home the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring titles to establish himself as the unchallenged champion.
Haney was compelled to fight Kambosos again due to a rematch clause, and this time, he defeated him in his own backyard. After that, Haney prevailed in a tough match against Vasiliy Lomachenko to keep the title. Last December, the 25-year-old made a weight increase and defeated Regis Prograis to claim the WBC super lightweight championship.
“My main focus is to stay focused, and whatever Ryan shows up, I’m going to be ready for. I know that Ryan is going to go in there and try to apply the pressure and come out swinging and come out wild like he does, but I’m going to break him down. I’m going to crush him. I’m going to step on him, no matter what.” remarked Haney through Boxing Scene.
In 2016, Garcia became a professional. After stopping Luke Campbell to win the WBC lightweight title on short notice, he lost steam due to injuries and mental health problems. Garcia defeated Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna before losing a catchweight money bout against Gervonta Davis in seven rounds. Following the Davis bout, Joe Goossen was replaced as Garcia’s trainer by Derrick James.
Through knockout in December, Garcia defeated Oscar Duarte. Given Garcia’s contentious outbursts on and off social media, there have been some questions about his suitability for the fight. He must submit to a mental evaluation test, according to the New York Athletic Commission. That being said, the battle continues.
“My intention is to Kill Devil Haney. No mercy I hope he is ready to die. I hope he has come to terms with it. For the record, his dad announced my death first. This is war this isn’t for the faint of heart,” Garcia wrote on his X profile.
