Haney has held gold since 2019, when he beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC lightweight belt. He became undisputed champion after defeating George Kambosos Jr in Australia in June 2022.
Since then, he has successfully defended his crown twice, once in a rematch in Australia in October and then retained against modern legend Vasiliy Lomachenko in Las Vegas in May.
After beating Vasyl Lomachenko, Haney indicated in his post-fight press conference to move up a division due to complications getting to the 135-pound limit and will do so this Saturday.

Prograis turned pro in 2012. He beat Luis Eduardo Florez in 2016 to win the NABF super lightweight title. In 2018, he won the interim WBC super lightweight title 2018 against Julius Indongo.
He competed in the World Boxing Super Series super lightweight tournament and beat Terry Flanagan and Kiryl Relikh (winning WBA gold). However, he failed to beat Josh Taylor in the finals for the IBF title. Since then, he has gone 5-0, winning the last bout on a split decision in June against Danielito Zorrilla.
Haney vs Prograis: What has been said?
Haney Devin is the favorite to win, but Prograis is confident of maintaining his dominance at 140 pounds.
“We are finally ready to kick off on Saturday, Dec. 9, and I can’t wait to put on a show,” He said.
“I’ve already started training camp, and I’ll be more than ready to do what I do best. Devin has done well at 135 pounds, but I’m the best in the world at 140 pounds and I’ll prove it once again.”
On the other hand, Haney is focused on his debut at 140 pounds and is approaching the fight as a professional challenge rather than a personal rivalry.
“On paper this is a tough fight because it’s my first fight at a heavier weight division,” Haney said.
“I’m comfortable with the plan have. God willing, I’m going to be stronger and faster than ever. I’m going to dominate him, and the welterweight division will be put on notice.”
“It’s never personal, this is a business at the end of the day. We’re two gentlemen at the end of the day, but when we get in the ring, we don’t have respect for each other. I’m going to go in there and do my job.”
